    2008 Supporters of the Year

Habitat for Humanity – South Dakota has three main purposes which are to inform people of the great work that Habitat is doing in South Dakota, to inspire people to continue on the journey for decent affordable housing as well as to get more people involved in this mission, and to give people an opportunity to invest in Habitat.

HFHSD would like to extend thanks to our major sponsors for the Fall Fundraiser and Recognition Banquet and Kick off of the First Annual Statewide Congressional Delegation Build: Avera, Citigroup, Wells Fargo Native People’s South Dakota Team Member Resource Group, Marshall FirstBank, Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz, & Smith, Insty Prints, and the Event Committee.

The following people were honored as the 2008 Supporters of the Year:

Larson Manufacturing & Larson Family Foundation
recognized by Habitat for Humanity – SD

The relationship between the Larson family and Habitat for Humanity International began fourteen years ago with a common interest in helping to eliminate substandard housing for all people.

Over the past fourteen years, Larson Manufacturing has been the national storm door sponsor for Habitat for Humanity International through the organization's gifts-in-kind program. As of July 2008, Larson Manufacturing has donated 67,961 doors to Habitat homes across the United States.

In 1994, the Larson Foundation joined former President Jimmy Carter in support of Habitat's mission to build 30 homes in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Larson sponsored one and one-half homes for the Jimmy Carter Building Blitz that summer. Employees of Larson Manufacturing traveled to Eagle Butte to install a storm door on the front and back doors of each house.

And in 1995, The Larson Family Foundation announced a program to fund a Habitat for Humanity home in each of the 13 communities that Larson Manufacturing was located in. The Foundation has also offered matching funds to Habitat for Humanity to build homes across the state and has provided funds for statewide technical assistance.

Larson Manufacturing, a fifty-four year old, family-owned company based in Brookings, South Dakota, is the nation's number one manufacturer of storm doors and storm windows.

The Larson Family Foundation was created in 1990 by the Larson Family to share its good fortune with the people of South Dakota. The focus of the Foundation's grantmaking is to help people in need to achieve a better quality of life. The Foundation primarily grants funding for Human Service, Education and Cultural Activities through capital grants, project support, endowments, matching funds, emergency assistance and operating expenses.

    Habitat for Humanity – SD
Sicangu Tikaga Okiciyapi Habitat for Humanity- Mission

The husband and wife team of Joel and Doris Cardwell, who were the Construction Manager and Executive Director, respectively, of Sicangu Tikaga Okiciyapi for many years, suddenly had to leave the affiliate in the summer of 2007 due to a family illness. With the loss of this great couple came serious concerns for the future of the affiliate.

But with the dedication and determination of HFH-SD’s board and staff, STO-HFH was able to sustain its mission of making a difference in the lives of families on the Rosebud Reservation. HFH-SD’s board and staff were instrumental in insuring. Board members helped the affiliate by providing technical and legal advice. And HFH-SD’s staff, Patty, Kelli, and Sara, spent many hours on the phone and in person providing direction and emotional support as the affiliate dealt with the possibility of not being able to continue its mission.

There are not enough words to describe the gratitude that we have for this strong State Support Organization. Thank you.
